WORKSHOPS

WORKSHOP : INTRODUCTION INTO INTERVIEWING

This one-day workshop aims to deliver basic knowledge about how to conduct in-depth interviews and later analyse them. We introduce both traditional and innovative qualitative methods used in anthropological research – participant observation, photo voice, shadowing etc. and how these methods can be applied in service and product design. Possible ethical risks that might rise in the process will also be addressed, as well as ways of avoiding them. The participants are given a practical task to interview somebody, followed by a discussion and feedback session.

First and foremost, this workshop is most beneficial for product or service designers, aimed at understanding their users and wishing to learn more about interviewing as a method.

Duration: 1 day

Capacity: up to 16 people

TWO-STEP PRACTICAL WORKSHOP: CONDUCTING IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS AND ANALYSIS

The goal of the workshop is to give participants new skills for conducting qualitative interviews and analysis. We’ll introduce participant observation, shadowing, photo voice and other traditional as well as innovative methods used in anthropology.
There is usually a 1–2 week long gap between the two workshop days when perticipants are expected to carry out independent practical work.

The first day of the workshop will give an overview of a variety of  “tools” used in anthropology, share experiences and tips about compiling a research plan and conducting interviews. Possible ethical risks that might rise while conducting fieldwork will also be addressed, as well as ways of avoiding them. After that, we’ll compile a research plan together with the participants of the workshop.

The first workshop day will be followed by a 2-week practical task when the participants will be encouraged to practice conducting interviews independently and organise collected materials.

The second day of the workshop will take a step further with the material from the independent work from the two weeks in between. We share experiences and analytical methods and help you to find your way in the data that might seem a total chaos for you, at least at first glance. We’ll help you to find and recognise patterns in human behavior and thinking that can be later applied in further service or product design.

First and foremost, this workshop is most beneficial for product or service designers, aimed at understanding their users, wishing to learn more about interviewing as a method and develop their analytical skills. The results of this practical workshop can be applied for an already ongoing project as well, not to mention new and innovative challenges ahead.

Duration: 2 days of workshop and independent work (with mentoring)

Capacity: up to 8 people
